Five considered steps to a room that goes beyond function

1. Tile with intention

Hand-painted blue and white tile, or a bold patterned border, turns a purely functional room into one with real character. Even a small accent strip changes the entire feel.

2. Choose fittings that age, not just function

Aged brass or bronze taps and hardware develop a patina over the years rather than looking simply old. Chrome looks tired; bronze looks lived-in, on purpose.

3. Soften every hard surface

Thick, good-quality towels in a rich tone, a wooden bath mat, a single plant that tolerates humidity. Tile and stone need textile to stop the room feeling clinical.

4. Mirror with weight

A substantial wood-framed mirror does more for a bathroom's character than almost any other single object. Avoid anything thin, plastic, or purely functional.

5. Keep the surfaces nearly empty

One soap dish, one candle, perhaps a small vase. Of every room in the house, the bathroom rewards restraint the most — clutter here reads as neglect rather than charm.
