Five considered steps to a room built for rest
1. Invest in what touches skin
Linens and bedding matter more than almost anything else in this room. Good cotton or linen, in a rich and considered colour, does more for comfort and elegance than any amount of furniture.
2. Anchor the bed with a substantial headboard
Carved wood, panelled detail, or a deep upholstered frame gives the room a focal point and a sense of permanence. Avoid anything that feels temporary.
3. Layer pillows with restraint
Three to five, in coordinating but not matching textures — velvet, damask, a plain linen sham. More than that starts to look like a hotel display rather than a bed someone sleeps in.
4. Light it low and warm
Bedside lamps with fabric shades, never overhead spotlighting. The bedroom is the one room in the house that should never feel fully lit.
5. Add one object with a story
A framed photograph, an inherited trinket box, a candle in a hand-thrown dish. The bedroom should feel like it belongs to someone, not a showroom.
