Five considered steps to a kitchen that earns its keep

1. Choose a hardworking surface

Hand-glazed Talavera-style tile, warm terracotta, or rich wood countertops bring character that laminate never will. Choose surfaces that look better with use, not worse.

2. Let open shelving do some showing off

A few shelves of hand-painted plates, jugs, and bowls turn everyday storage into something worth looking at. Keep the rest behind closed cabinetry so the display stays intentional, not cluttered.

3. Warm metals over cold chrome

Aged brass, bronze, and wrought iron on taps, handles, and light fittings soften a kitchen considerably. These finishes patina beautifully rather than showing every fingerprint.

4. Cook somewhere that smells of something

A bowl of lemons, a jar of dried herbs, fresh bread under a linen cloth. A kitchen styled for the eye but not engaged by the nose is only half finished.

5. Light the work, then light the room

Task lighting over counters and hobs, then a single statement fitting — an iron chandelier or hanging lantern — for atmosphere once the cooking is done.
